DECOMMUNIZATION.UA

Ukraine 2016

Genre Documentary

A documentary series dedicated to decommunisation in Ukraine. However, the episodes, each of which is a separate short film, are not about the demolition of monuments or renaming. They are about two types of worldview: Soviet and modern. The documentary series was filmed by five teams consisting of young documentary filmmakers and videographers. They were assisted by experienced mentors and trainers.

Soviet –> Native Land. This story is about how the village of Soviet, where only two families have lived for a long time, was decommunised. The protagonists assert that their internal decommunisation took place long ago, so all that remained was to change the sign at the entrance to the village to Native Land.

Sector (M)ariupol. The series with this title is dedicated to the generational conflict among fans of the Mariupol football club Illichivets. The ultras insist that the team's Soviet name should be changed, while the older fans are convinced that a new name will not improve the players' performance.

Communal flat. Young and ambitious Timofey, an employee of Impact HUB Odessa, and his Soviet-era neighbours, who are convinced that "there's no point in trying – nothing will change," live in an old communal flat in Odessa. Everything in the apartment is falling apart, and Timofey suggests that his neighbours join forces to renovate the bathroom...

The Alive and Unconquered Team, Chervonohrad. In Chervonohrad, Lviv Oblast, two choirs have been competing for years. One choir consists of nationalists and veterans of the OUN/UPA, while the other consists of representatives of the Russian community, veterans of labour and the Great Patriotic War. They rehearse in the same House of Culture, and its director makes sure that they do not meet in order to avoid conflicts. However, they did end up crossing paths — during filming...

A pair of Olympians. Twenty-five years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine is still not equipped to accommodate people with disabilities. The hero of this series is a man who participated in the first and only Paralympics from the USSR in 1988. In the Soviet Union, people with disabilities were hidden away as far as possible because they did not fit the image of an ideal society. And although the Paralympic Games have existed since 1960, the USSR team took part in them for the first time only 30 years later...
