Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, cemeteries have seen graves marked with plaques reading "Here rests a temporarily unidentified defender of Ukraine." These graves hold the bodies of soldiers whose identities are being sought by the volunteers of the "Evacuation 200" project. These volunteers, without any guarantees of safety, retrieved bodies following the tragedy in Ilovaisk – their first major challenge. They continue their work following Russia's full-scale invasion. When a soldier's identity is known, their body is returned to their family so they can say their goodbyes and place personal items in the grave: "Parents receive the body; they have a place to come to. It is grief, it is a tragedy, but they have certainty. Until there is a body, they hope that he is alive, perhaps in captivity."

Sometimes it takes years to retrieve a body. "A mother said goodbye to her son's body five years later; she came and said, 'I'm taking my son home,'" says coordinator Pavlo Netiosov. For the volunteers, it is important to find and identify everyone, despite the difficulties. The documentary film "On the Shield" tells the story of the "Evacuation 200" organization, its mission, and the people who follow it.

The film is based on the novel of the same name by VS Krotkov.
