The beautiful building of the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Drohobych Pedagogical University was built during the Austro-Hungarian Empire for the district court. Since the early 1960s, it has been a hub of student life. However, for 40 years, the walls of this building held a terrible secret that was only whispered about. The NKVD prison created in this building became a place of serious crimes, the truth about which only began to emerge in independent Ukraine thanks to concerned citizens.

Kum, a Cossack character, lives alone in the village, away from the community. No one, not even the old woman Karpyha, who spreads gossip in the village, knows who he was or where he came from. Kum's sturdy physique and reticence cause fear among the adults in the village, but not among the children. The children feel that the Cossack is carefully hiding a secret from people.
