Lucas is experiencing a midlife crisis. He works as an interpreter at the OSCE Kiev office and goes to the Crimea border as part of a monitoring mission. After several strange coincidences, Lucas is left alone in a small town in southern Ukraine. Not knowing where to go, he finds himself in the house of a local weirdo named Vova. Following Vova, Lucas slowly sinks into the life of the Ukrainian province, into a world beyond his imagination, where things seem completely detached from all logic or structure.

In these strange places where people find happiness in the simplest, often illusory things, where the past, present and future are intertwined, where every day can be the last, Lucas gets a chance to start life again.

He escapes and finds work in the Austro-Hungarian fortress, where he continues his experiments with the ether, the purpose of which is not only the relief of pain, but also the manipulation of human behavior. Openly proclaiming his atheistic views, the doctor often speaks of the superiority and key role of science. Researching the ether for him is above all: he conducts experiments with his assistant Taras, and after a meeting with the commandant of the fortress begins illegal espionage activities to finance further work. After discovering such activity of the doctor, he tries to commit suicide with the help of ether, but it fails. After all, he was handed a death sentence.
