On the first day of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian paratroopers began storming the Antonov airport in Hostomel with the help of several dozen helicopters. According to the Kremlin's plan, they were to take control of the airport so that transport planes with military personnel and equipment could land there and begin their offensive on Kyiv.
The first battle in Hostomel was fought by the National Guard of Ukraine, most of whom were conscripts and staff officers. The defenders of Hostomel repelled the first attack, destroyed the runway and prevented enemy aircraft from landing.
The heroes of the project are two rescuers from the State Emergency Service who were at the airport fire station that day. One of them became a prisoner of war, the other came under fire. Another hero is a member of the National Guard of Ukraine. He will tell the audience the details of the first battle for the airport and show the remains of Russian helicopters that stormed Hostomel. Antonov employees and residents of Hostomel will also share their memories of these events.
