Dmytro Ternovy is a playwright, actor, theater manager. Born in 1969 in Kharkiv, he received his education in Russian philology at the Karazin Kharkiv National University. Following a career in journalism, together with his wife and director Olga Ternova, he founded the Theatre na Zhukah in Kharkiv (2007). He also initiated and supervised the educational project Theatrical window to Europe, then began to develop as a playwright and won a number of awards at international and national drama competitions. In 2012, his play Detalization which anticipates the events of the Maidan revolution won the largest Eastern European playwriting contest Talking About Borders. It was translated into German, Polish, French, published in Austria, in Germany (theatre magazine Theatre Today ("Theater heute", August-September 2014), in France, Poland, Ukraine (e.g. in a collection of contemporary drama Maidan: Before and After). The play was warmly welcomed by German critics. "It is an insanely complex theatrical text, where scenes are resolved in totally different styles which cannot be cut in one go," wrote the German daily Süddeutsche Zeitung. In 2014, the play was staged at Badisches Staatstheater (Karlsruhe), in 2017 - at the Theatre na Zhukah (Ukraine), and in 2018 – by En Details company in Paris. In 2016, the play 39 or The Apocalypse Bus won the Dramaturgy nomination at the Kalmius Literary Competition in Ukraine. It was subsequently published in the collection of contemporary Ukrainian drama The Labyrinths of Ice and Fire (2019), this play has had no stage history so far. In 2018, the play Ward N7 came second in the first national radio drama competition. The play premiered on national radio in September 2019. It was also translated into English and German. In 2019, the play The Butterfly Wing made it to the finals of the Drama Lab for Children under the auspices of National Theatre Association of Ukraine. Among new works is Hamlet. Show, or Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Alive (2019) - a play that puts the events of the Shakespearean tragedy into modern Ukraine (translated into Polish, actor readings and productions are being prepared), and the libretto play titled Blue Bird. The Return (written as part of a project supported by the Ukrainian Cultural Fund to create a modern national opera).
