The plot centres on a team of specialists investigating modern crimes whose roots lie in the past. It is led by historian and anthropologist Roman Koliada, who uses archival materials, cause-and-effect analysis, and an unconventional approach. He is assisted by experienced investigator Ivan Samoilovych, a proponent of “old school” criminology, and IT specialist Olena Pototska, who developed the ARCHI artificial intelligence system for analysing archives and searching for hidden facts.

The team uses artificial intelligence, 3D scanning, DNA analysis, cryptography, and digital reconstruction, working with a large array of digitised materials – from criminal cases to personal letters and museum artefacts.

The events of the series unfold throughout the twentieth century. After the Bolshevik coup in 1917, Odessa is undergoing a change of seven powers for three years.
