Mystetskyi Arsenal — The Mystetskyi Arsenal National Cultural, Art and Museum Complex opened in Kyiv in 2007. During the 2010s, it became one of Ukraine’s most important cultural institutions. The Mystetskyi Arsenal National Cultural, Art and Museum Complex is situated in Pechersk. This is one of the three historic districts of Kyiv, which for centuries has been associated with the Holy Dormition Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, founded in 1051. According to the researcher O. Krainya, a community of nuns existed within the monastery from the 1540s onwards. ‘The Pattern of Chastity’ — a panegyric to Archimandrite Elisha Pletenetsky of the Pechersk Lavra (1619) — contains the earliest mention of the Ascension Pechersk Convent.

Between 1688 and 1707, Maria Mazepina (known as Maria Magdalene after taking the veil) served as the convent's abbess. Thanks to her son Hetman Ivan Mazepa's patronage, the Ascension Convent experienced a period of great prosperity. At Maria Magdalene’s expense, between 1701 and 1705, the wooden Church of the Ascension was replaced by a magnificent stone five-domed cathedral with three altars and a bell tower, as well as the Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God.
