Joseph Slipyi became the head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church after the death of Metropolitan Andrei Sheptytsky and then - from 1944 to 1984 - passed a tragic and majestic life, for which the world called him "Prince of the Church." Eighteen years of imprisonment in Soviet concentration camps, release from prison at the request of Pope John XXIII and US President John F. Kennedy, arrival in Rome and sacrificial work in the Italian capital to restore the self-governing system of the UGCC. The construction of St. Sophia Cathedral there and the opening in 1963 of the Ukrainian Catholic University, which had branches in London, Washington and Chicago. In 1992, according to the will, the cardinal's ashes were transferred from Rome to Lviv. Joseph Slipyi hoped that his ashes would one day rest in St. Sophia Cathedral ...
