The documentary "Nightingale sings. While the Voice Has" is an innovative and monumental study of the language issue in Ukraine.
The authors analyze the linguistic situation not in the usual, widespread form of confrontation of political forces, but investigate the much deeper causes and consequences of the current confrontation around the Ukrainian language. The film's authors are trying to find the answer to the question: "Why speak Ukrainian in the 21st century in Ukrainian for many citizens is nonsense, why do these citizens feel rejected and opposed?" To answer this question, the makers of the documentary dive deep into history and explore, objectively shatter the myths that have been planted for centuries as the only truth about the borders, spheres, and carriers of Ukrainian.
How often do you hear the widespread “What difference does it make in which language”, “Language does not matter”, “Ukrainian was spoken only in villages”, “Ukrainian has never been in Kyiv”? Do any of those who relay these ideas think that they were, in fact, skillfully integrated into public opinion by the propaganda of the Russian Empire, the Soviet Union, the Russian Federation? And most importantly – are they designed for repeaters, why? If language really doesn't matter, then why for many centuries has each of the invaders of the Ukrainian lands tried, first and foremost, to eliminate the Ukrainian language by resorting to sophisticated linguistic methods?
For the first time in the history of Ukrainian documentary journalism, the filmmakers analyze the Ukrainian language issue through the prism of the experiences of other countries, including Belarus and Israel. The history of these states proves that language was, and is especially acute today, one of the main ones
factors of national security and the integrity of many countries, as well as an important factor in the state of hybrid war in which Ukraine is involved.
A groundbreaking feature of the film on the language issue is its good, non-aggressive tone. After all, the task set by the creative team is not to aggravate a conflict situation, but to draw attention to the need to disseminate true history and proven information.
The creative team of Lesya Voronyuk, Sergiy Krymsky, the late Alexei Doli, Sergiy Martynov, Anastasia Fedchenko, Demid Yelizarova, Valentin Greenberg, Oleksandr Tkachuk, Roman Gomenyuk, Denis Kostandov, Denis Oleinik and others worked on the 2017 film.
The film was shot in Ukraine, Belarus, Israel, USA, UK
