The Holodomor was a mass-scale, man-made famine organised in the Ukrainian SSR in 1932–1933 by the leadership of the All-Union Communist Party (Bolsheviks) and the government of the USSR. Ukraine was the hardest hit, with millions of people dying of starvation. This famine has been recognised as genocide against the Ukrainian people. According to demographic estimates, the total number of victims of the Holodomor in the Ukrainian SSR is 3–7 million people. According to estimates by the M. Ptukha Institute of Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Ukraine’s demographic losses as a result of the Holodomor in 1932–1933 amount to approximately 4.5 million people, including 3.9 million due to excess mortality and a further 600,000 due to a birth deficit.

The film centres on Daisy and Erland, an Estonian couple who paid a Ukrainian clinic €50,000 for a surrogacy programme. Thanks to a surrogate mother from Ukraine, the couple have realised their long-held dream and now have a daughter.

To pay for the programme, the couple took out a loan, which they will be repaying over the next nine years. They had previously tried to use a surrogacy programme, but fell victim to fraudsters and lost €25,000.

“10 Years of War” delves into the phenomenon of Ukrainian resistance through the compelling stories of its heroes: activist Roman Ratushny, who was tragically killed in battle at just 24; his mother, writer Svitlana Povalyaeva; journalist Tetyana Chornovol; and paramedic Yulia Paevska (Tayra). The film examines their responses to the events on Maidan and the ongoing war, highlighting how their lives have transformed across significant historical milestones. Chronicling Ukraine's arduous journey since the Revolution of Dignity in 2014 — when protests evolved into a powerful movement advocating for democratic reform.
