The film is set in contemporary Ukraine. Mavka, a mystical and dangerous forest nymph, falls in love with biologist Lukian instead of drowning him in a mysterious forest lake where mermaids and other nymphs are waiting for men's souls. And they will do anything to keep Mavka on the dark side.
