Lesya Ukrainka started writing poetry early, a 9-year-old girl (a poem by Hope). Lesya wrote this first poem in her life under the influence of the news of the fate of her aunt Elena Kosach (married to Teslenko-Prikhodko) exiled for participation in the revolutionary movement. In 1884, the Lviv journal Zorya first published poems by Lily of the valley and Sappho, and recorded the name of Les Ukrainka; in subsequent revisions to the poem Sappho Les added a dedication brother
