The films "Atlantis", "Anton and the Red Chimera" and "The Price of Truth" were shortlisted for the Oscars.

27 February 2021

On February 25, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a list of films that meet the eligibility requirements for the selection of Oscar nominees. 366 films have been included in this kind of "long list", officially called the "Reminder List of Productions Eligible for the 93 Academy Awards", which can be translated as "list of reminders". Among the potential contenders for the Oscar are films made with Ukrainian financial participation - "Atlantis", "Anton and the Red Chimera" and "The Price of Truth". All three of these works were shot with the financial support of the State Agency of Ukraine for Cinema.

What is Reminder List:

- All films submitted by the owners to the Academy for participation in the award and meet the qualification requirements are summarized in a single "long list", which indicates the English title of the film and a list of acting works - up to 10 actors and up to 10 actresses for each film submitted by the studio, without specifying the plan, the acting branch of the Academy independently solves this issue). Also, films that are included in the "remainder list" have the right to be considered in other categories, except those where the general rules of the Academy and the internal statutes of the profile committees provide special selection requirements - short film, documentary, animation, visual effects, music / song , "International film" and some others.

Features of the "Oscar" - 2021:

- The main qualification requirements remained unchanged - full length (duration over 40 minutes); the presence of either an English-language sound series (the rule does not apply if there are no dialogues in the work), or English-language subtitles for foreign releases. But due to the pandemic and restrictive measures, the Academy for the first time not only expanded the territory of qualifying cinema screenings (previously it was only Los Angeles County), but also allowed online distribution for this period (although with conditions: producers had to confirm that under normal circumstances they would organize the usual weekly qualifying release). To participate in the "Oscar chase", the candidate film had to be submitted for download on a special digital screening platform of the Academy (by the way, this is a relatively expensive event). The release period was extended, instead of the usual calendar year "January 1 - December 31", the release of films was extended until February 28: thus, participants were required to organize distribution from January 1, 2020 to February 28, 2021.

When to expect results:

- The Academy has already announced "shortlists" with candidates in 9 categories, will now distribute the Reminder List to all members of the award who vote. On March 5, the voting of the branches of the Academy for the determination of nominees will begin, which will last until March 10. On March 15, the world will know who will be nominated for an Oscar-2021.

Statistics:

- Despite some qualification "obstacles", the number of participants has increased compared to previous years. So, on the 92nd "Oscar" 344 films were submitted, on "Oscar" -2019 - 347 films; in 2018 there were 341 films, in 2017 - 336 films, before that 305 (Oscar-2016) and 323 (Oscar-2015).
