The long list of Golden Globe nominees in the category "Best Foreign Language Film" has been announced

07 December 2020

On December 5, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which presents the Golden Globe Award, posted on its official website a list of accepted applications for the Best Non-English Language Film nomination.

The official website of the award states that 138 films (96 last year and 80 the year before) from 77 countries (including co-productions) were accepted for consideration, and 36 of them were directed, including co-authored, by women.

Among the submitted applications are Ukrainian films, or those created in co-production:

- "Atlantis", dir. Valentin Vasyanovich

- "Anton and the Red Chimera", dir. Zaza Urushadze is a film created in co-production with Georgia and Lithuania.

The full list of candidate films can be found on the official website of the Golden Globe at:

• Traditionally, unlike the American Film Academy, which accepts only one application from a country, the number of applications for a "globe" is unlimited. Qualification requirements are - a feature film (documentary is not taken; animation is considered in its "native" category) must contain more than 51% of non-English dialogues. US-made films are accepted if they are not in English.

• This year the rental and release rule has been changed. The film must be released for rental or VOD in any country (previously required national rental) from October 1, 2019 to February 28, 2021.

• Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants did not have to arrange a mandatory physical cinema screening for the award selection committee, but had to upload the film to a special streaming platform of the association.

• Because, again, unlike the Oscars, HFPA does not require the selection of authorized national committees to submit films and can be submitted by producers and / or rights holders, some films are traditionally identical to Oscar applications.

The Golden Globe Awards are an annual American award given by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). The members of the association are foreign film journalists and film reviewers who cover events in the American entertainment industry for foreign news outlets. The association has about 90 members from 55 countries.
