The Battle of Zbarazh is one of the most difficult and tragic moments in the liberation war of the Ukrainian people against the rule of noble Poland (1648-1657). Led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky, the Cossack army seized Zbarazh in a close siege. The Polish nobility, led by fierce enemy of Ukraine Yarema Vyshnevetsky, was trapped: food supplies ended, famine began, illnesses began; Yarema sent dozens of messengers to the Polish King with pleas for military aid, but none of the messengers could break through the Cossack siege.

It would seem that soon Cossack Cossacks will celebrate the final victory, but an unforeseen event happened – the alliance with the Crimean Khan turned for treason. Bohdan Khmelnitsky was faced with a difficult choice – to take the expensive victory over Poland, drown Ukraine in blood, or to accept the humiliating and extremely disadvantageous terms of a peace agreement. The enormous military casualties, the betrayal of the closest allies, and the personal tragedy of the family were just a part of the torment suffered at the time by the great Hetman of Ukraine.
