The story unfolds in a Soviet military unit, where the older soldiers, anticipating their demobilisation, decide to ‘traditionally’ make fun of the younger recruits. However, not everyone is willing to submit and put up with it. Among those who refuse is Private Bilyk. He not only refuses to comply, but also resolves to defend his dignity, including his national identity. His protest provokes even greater aggression, and his principled stance gradually turns into a true test of resilience. Ultimately, this leads to tragedy.
