The story of an 8-year-old boy who returned with his mother to his hometown for evacuation in the winter of 1944. Halfway home, at an unknown halfway station, they are removed from the train as the boy's mother becomes ill with typhoid. She is taken to a hospital where she soon dies. The child is left alone with his grief, among strangers who, by and large, do not care for him. In one day he has to grow up, assuring himself that everything will be fine. Confiding in strangers, he continues his journey home, to the only native person – grandfather. From the train window, the boy last sees a station whose name he never knows. All he remembered about his mom's forever stay was that there was an old tower house on the plaza.
