This two-part documentary explores the complex relationship between Ukrainian artists and the Soviet authorities: how, despite the pressure, they managed to create songs that outlived the Soviet Union and became symbols of an era.
The film is built around Ukrainian hits of the time, such as ‘The Song of the Towel’ and ‘Cheremshyna’, whilst also presenting a collective portrait of the creators of Ukrainian song — Platon Maiboroda, Andrii Malyshko, Stepan Sabadash, Ihor Shamo, Dmytro Pavlychko and Oleksandr Bilash.
Many cultural figures, journalists and historians took part in the project, and their expert commentary is featured in the film. These include poet Yuriy Rybchynskyi, cultural studies scholar Nataliia Kryvda, literary scholar Rostyslav Semkiv, musician Sviatoslav Vakarchuk, historian Oleksandr Palii, musician Kyrylo Stetsenko, musicologist Valentyna Kuzyk, film scholar Serhiy Trymbach, musician Albert Tsukrenko, radio journalist Olesia Bilash, poet Viktor Herasymov, radio presenter Halyna Babii, music journalist Phil Pukhariev, musician Mykhailo Khoma, musician Oleksandra Koltsova, journalist Yaroslav Shcherbakov, radio presenter Dmytro Bakal, literary scholar Yaryna Tsymbal, music collector Ihor Kalinichenko, former director of the National Philharmonic Dmytro Ostapenko, director of the Ukrainian Radio Museum Anatolii Tabachenko.
