Markiian Sych, an investigator from Kyiv, arrives in the Carpathian village of Yaseny for rehabilitation after being wounded in the line of duty. Instead of a peaceful recuperation, he finds himself at the centre of a series of mysterious deaths and becomes involved in the investigation. Local police officer Ivan Basiuk is keen to close the case as quickly as possible, whilst the villagers blame it all on evil spirits and a mysterious creature called Mara. The investigation gradually uncovers the villagers’ dark past, their fears, secrets and hushed-up events.
