After 20 years of imprisonment following an unjust sentence, Inokentiy Bochkin is released. He tries to reunite with his daughter Nastya, who was raised by police lieutenant colonel Vasily Tuchkov, who was forced to resign for refusing to participate in the fraud. With the help of cheerful adventures, Bochkin manages not only to settle in Tuchkov's house, but also to start an affair with his sister Maria. Now Nastya and her two parents are in for a lot of adventures, as Bochkin is forced by circumstances to steal a painting from an official on the orders of an “authority” who, upon learning of this, tries to send him back to prison with all the means at his disposal before he can commit the theft.
