Malanka is the folk name for the celebration of the New Year, which has pre-Christian roots. This extraordinary winter performance captivates with its color, mood and meanings. The characters Vasyl and Malanka, Goat, Grandfather and Grandmother, Herod, Devil and others go from house to house to announce the coming of the new year, cheer people up and bring them happiness. Malankars, who prepare for this holiday every year on their own, not only bring light, but also continue a tradition that is so old in Ukraine that it was strictly forbidden in Soviet times.
The protagonist of this documentary, Dmytro Mazuryak, is a Ukrainian musician, a pipersinger in the Kazka band, which makes Hutsul musical instruments. He comes from the Bukovyna village of Ispas, where he has been continuing the tradition of malanka for 15 years. Living in Kyiv, Dmytro returns to his native land every year and organizes the Malanka festival there, because, according to him, it fills him up, gives him inspiration to live and create, and strengthens the invisible ties between generations.
