The film focuses on the SBU's Alpha special unit, which in 1994 stopped a rebellion by Russian proxies who sought to separate the peninsula from Ukraine overnight. The filmmakers talked to the participants of the special operation and learned firsthand about the events of those days, and the first head of the SBU provided unique archival footage for the film. This special operation lasted over three months. After the SBU seized Crimea, the Alpha unit's special forces settled in the building's assembly hall for another 90 days. The film reconstructs these events.

The protagonists of the documentary Crimea. Liberation are: Yevhen Marchuk, the first head of the Security Service of Ukraine, the person who first received approval from President Kravchuk to launch the special operation; Vasyl Krutov, Lieutenant General of the Security Service of Ukraine; Vitaliy Romanchenko, Major General of the Security Service of Ukraine; Colonels Serhiy Ropaev and Pavlo Dubrov of the Security Service of Ukraine; and Colonel Ivan Yakubets.
