At the funeral of her famous father, a general, the well-known journalist Marina Nikolaeva learns a truth she was completely unprepared for — she has been adopted. Everyone around her, including Marina’s fiancé, Artem, insists that she has fallen victim to a senseless prank. But Marina is not one to rely on speculation — she decides, come what may, to uncover the truth about her true origins. Upon arriving at the address on the note bearing the fateful news, Marina finds herself at the scene of a crime — the man who revealed the truth to her has been shot at point-blank range. Marina is arrested; she is now the sole suspect, and the detective in charge of the case is an old acquaintance of hers, whose life she has thoroughly ruined. Her connection to the general’s family works in her favour, and Marina is quickly released. Meanwhile, the investigator, Volchok—an experienced man with wisdom beyond his years—is moved by Marina’s story and sets about helping her, step by step, to get closer to the answer to her most pressing question: ‘Who is she, and what happened to her real family?’
