Yevhen Deslav is an extraordinary figure, even bizarre, like his modernity. A Ukrainian by birth, a representative of the "avant-garde generation" of the first half of the twentieth century, he spent most of his life abroad, being in the Czech Republic, Spain and France. He began filming in the 1920s, participated in international film festivals as a director, jury member, critic, maintained ties with the Ukrainian intelligentsia in exile, befriended S. Hordynsky, V. Vynnychenko, E. Bachynsky, for some time corresponded with O. Dovzhenko. He is known as the author of books, novels, short stories and as the first Slav to be admitted to the Spanish Writers' Association. Unlike the emigrants, valued at home, E.
