Today Baturyn is an ordinary village in the Chernihiv region, and a quarter of a millennium ago it was the hetman's capital of the Left Bank of Ukraine. First under Ivan Mazepa, then under the last Ukrainian Hetman Kirill Rozumovsky. Crafts, trade, culture, education and spirituality once flourished here and Ukrainian statehood was formed. One night in 1708, Baturyn was burned to the ground by soldiers of Peter the Great. Then all the buildings burned down and 20,000 people died.
