Emma, a large, nauseating ticket girl in her sixties, resembles a frozen marble pedestal, a bust in the frame of her cash register window. Somewhere far outside the door there is an echo of male and female opera voices, but nothing more happens in the shabby walls of the opera house, just as in Emma's life.
