The action of a four-part film is set in our time in the Russian suburban village of Veselovo and a small district center. Elementary school teacher Katya is engaged to a deputy of the district council Andrew. The girl wants to invite her sister to the wedding, with whom they have not been dating for a long time. But she learns that the sister died, leaving the orphan of seven-year-old son Alyosha. The sister's neighbors tell Katie that Alyoshin's father, Vasya, went to work. It turns out that he is actually getting a term in prison.
At this time, a new policeman, Michael, appears. He left his wife and threw his daughter Veronica. Romantic feelings arise between the law enforcement officer and Katya. Katya takes her nephew to her. However, the boy dislikes her fiance. Andrew tries to get rid of Alyosha. During the New Year, Vasya leaves prison.
