At the heart of the story is the fate of four villagers in a whirlwind of events unfolding during the Civil War in the Russian Empire of 1917-1921. Three guys - a Petliurian, a Makhnovets and a Red Army soldier - loved one girl who refused one, didn't wait for the second from the war and couldn't forget, and married a third.
