Dnepropetrovsk as the “space capital of the USSR” was a closed city until 1987. Special status has given the city the opportunity to begin construction of the subway. In 1995, six stations were opened. No new ones have been built since. For 20 years, each mayor has promised to continue construction. Today, the Dnieper metro is one of the shortest in the world. But the small number of passengers and the almost complete absence of intrusive advertising, have kept the subway a special atmosphere – an underground retro-futuristic city.
