A 15-year-old Giovanni, with his mother, two brothers, an older sister and a little niece, were forced to leave their native town in southern Italy and move to Tuscany. The guy reads the Divine Comedy book by Dante Alighieri, which he inherited from his father.
After the death of the pope during World War II, the boy tries to make sense of the profound implications of the work of the famous Florentine. But understanding Aligieri's literary journey is not so easy for a teenager, especially when filled with commentary and references to other writer's works. One day, Giovanni learns from his older brother that the town has a large library in the old castle and decides to look for answers there. In the library, the boy not only answers his questions, but also the real first teacher, who will become a guide in cognition and open the boy his university.
