After the victory of the Communists in the Russian Empire in 1917, the UNR army was defeated by the Red Army and forcibly included in the Soviet Union. As soon as Stalin established himself in power in the late 1920s, by his orders, the Communist Party, by systematic terror, established control over all aspects of social and political life in Ukraine. The Ukrainian peasantry was the first victim of a new ruling power, as rebellions against the Communists continued and threatened to overthrow the Communist government. In 1932, the Moscow Decree came out, costing the lives of millions. Despite the harvest year, people were taking away all their supplies and, in addition, all their food and livestock, arguing that they were creating collective farms. Subsequently, when people were left with nothing, they began to search for the remains of seeds in the fields, and came out the law of spikelets for which there was a shooting. So people ate weeds and mice, and then cannibalism began.

In the plot of the story, in the center of this tragedy was an ordinary peasant family – children, father and wife and their old mother, who soon began to bear the first loss of starvation ... The first to die weak children. And the tragedy will see this viewer through the eyes of a hungry child.
